Seeing countless images of people from all around the world gathering and celebrating the inauguration of President Obama gave me pause and made me think of our country in a whole new light.
(Small sample).Up until yesterday I could not imagine the actual amount of positive influence that our country has on the rest of the world.
Of course we are taught our country's dealings in courses through school, but do we ever really experience it? For the last 8 years America has been a country at war. Shamed and embarrassed yet stubborn to the point of purposely pissing off the rest of the world (as it seemed to me). The list of countries to be at war with seemed like it was going to grow each year.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea. Strained relations with the next two countries in line to become super powers did not help either. Russia and China. Tossing treaties out the window, restarting arms races, and concentrating on other countries and their human rights violations while covering up those committed by our own military.
So much happened that put fear into the western world. Bombings and attacks throughout Europe putting the west on edge and anxious. After thinking about all of this I could not have imagined the reaction that happened yesterday.
I became confused. Were they cheering that with President Obama we are going to finally stop being bastards, or is it they now think that America will put it's feet back on the ground and give a helping hand to the rest of the world? Maybe both?
Being the sole super power of the world, I think.. no, I know we can help the rest of the world.
Dear Citizens of the World,
Not all Americans are racist, extremist, and so negative. Those of us excited about the possibility of changes toward responsibility and understanding want to repair our relationship with you. Give us some time to support our new president and we will be there yet again. Our duty to you is much greater than we thought, and it was your voice yesterday that proved to us we have made a difference before and we can make a difference again. Your confidence helps and has made me proud to be apart of not only the United States, but also a member of this world community.
With Regards and Best Wishes,
A. Ernst
